Controversial Newark, N.J., Mayor Cory Booker is challenging one of his many denizens of Twitterverse to a challenge. When Booker tweeted a bit of ancient Greek wisdom, his attempts at translating the verse took an unexpected turn, resulting in Booker having to live off of food stamps for a week, reports The Daily Beast.
On Sunday, Booker tweeted a nugget of wisdom from Greek historian Plutarch to his more than 1 million followers:
An imbalance between rich and poor is the oldest and most fatal ailment of all republics.
Afterward, Booker’s quote set off a wave of discussion, with one of his followers, Twitwit – who just happens to be a self-described “Daughter of the American Revolution (DAR), fighting against any and all forms of socialism/communism” — complaining about the quote, saying “nutrition is not a responsibility of the government.”
After pinging each other back and forth about the topic of nutrition, the Mayor challenged the follower to experience what people on food stamps are going through. Booker, who is often referred to as the “man of the people,” tweeted:
Lets you and I try to live on food stamps in New Jersey (high cost of living) and feed a family for a week or month. U game?”
Twitwit agreed.
As of Monday, while Twitwit said that she had not heard from Booker about the proposed week-long challenge, Booker was reportedly hammering out the arrangements because he wants the challenge to be taped.
The University of Bridgeport in Connecticut already had a food stamp challenge in the works for early December, so it offered to referee Booker and provide rules for the challenge.
Via his Twitter account Monday afternoon, Booker requested that the institution provide him with a contact number so that he can receive further information.
