THE MARDI GRAS EXPERIENCE…
The Friends of MHMRA hosted their 6th Annual Mardi Gras Gala at the H.E.S.S. Club. The organization was created in 2005 to enhance and expand the services provided by and through MHMRA of Harris County, which is a publicly-funded agency. Because it is, there are many services that are needed that cannot be funded using public dollars and their mission and goal is to provide comprehensive services that will allow persons with mental illness to live with dignity, in homes or environments of their own choosing, access other community resources, services and work, stabilize and remain out of hospitals and jails and to become fully functioning, participating and contributing members of our community.
This year’s honorees included Precinct One Constable Jack Abercia and the members of the Mental Health Warrant Division of Harris County to include Chief Michael Butler, Captain Cindy Leija, Captain Harry Cunningham, Lt. Troy Billings, Sgt. Jeff Haggard, Deputy Chris Chargois, Marissa Abercia, D. J. DeLaHoussaye, Frank Dozier, Chris Jaris, Bryan Rice, Derrick Dollar, Anthony Gatewood and Robert Simmons.
This division is the largest mental health warrant division in Texas and serves the entire county. The agency executes all of the mental health warrants issued by judges in Harris County and delivers all processes associated with each case. These warrants are issued for individuals who are unable or unwilling to care for themselves and have demonstrated that they are a danger to themselves or others. The deputies assigned to the division are trained in crisis intervention.
The success of the evening could be seen on the smiling faces of the organization’s president, Dr. Steven B. Schnee and Marshenell Sells, vice president of MHMRA Resource Development and event chair. Spotted at the event were Jacque Abercia, Geraldine Royal, Alice Rauls, Shamekia Moss, Vernell Wiltz, Carmen Garrett, Dannie Liggans, Eric Miller, Tracie Miller and Cynthia and Dr. Daryl Knox, to name a few. Jose Grinan, Anchor for Fox 26 Morning News-KRIV-TV served as master of ceremonies and Jeff Rosenburg, Alan Helman and Georgia Provost did a splendid job with the live auction.
Great event and continued success!
