Rapper Nicki Minaj named a rising star by Billboard

Billboard will honor Nicki Minaj as rising star of 2011 at its “Women in Music” event on Dec. 2 in New York City.

Minaj said she was “deeply honored” by the recognition. She also said she and her fans have come a “mighty long way” but are not close to where “God will take us.”

The rapper and singer has seen her popularity skyrocket since the release last year of her debut album “Pink Friday.” Her hits include “Super Bass” and “Moment 4 Life.”

A native of Trinidad, Minaj moved to New York City at the age of five. She began her music career in 2007, and had her first label success after her discovery by Lil Wayne. With the release of “Pink Friday,” she became the first artist ever to have seven singles on the Billboard Hot 100 at the same time.
